Peter Balskovic

Posted in media techonolgy at 9:56 am by Melly

This website, is SO much fun.

A friend of mine recently sent me the link to a page on this website, and I explored it further. Really, the things that you can make from here, are beautiful, and I recommend checking it out for sure.

Peter Blaskovic is a 3D animator and designer, his website consists of his own artwork and things using 3d programs to create.

The page I’m recommending (although you should look at the whole site, his artwork is nice too) is actually the “experiments” page. Here Blaskovic has created a number of programs that factor in science ( such as particles, gravity fields and molecules) and has made them into art. It really is hard to explain, but with some colour, freedom and I want to use the word “chance” you can make really memorizing images.

*added in later* I’m playing around on the website right now, and although I can explain it, Balskovic does explain about each piece under the project box. I suggest reading it, pretty interesting stuff really*

Anyways check it out , and play around!

http://www.escapemotions.com/index.html <– main page. check out everything if you can, 3rd link is to the experiments page. I recommend going to the link below, it gives an idea of what to expect and I really like the project he’s created.

http://www.escapemotions.com/experiments/flame/index.html#top <— this was the page I was first introduced to, fun stuff. try all the buttons (I currently have one of my creations as my desktop background) All you need to do to start is click.

John F. Simon

Posted in media techonolgy at 9:42 am by Melly

Part of my assignment for this blog is to research an artist using new media and write about them. We were given a long list of artists to help in our search.

Since I had no information on any of the artists, I just choose names at random until I came across a piece that caught my eye. I ended up on, John F. Simon Jr. At first it was because I liked one of the pieces and thought it looked really cool, so I checked out his website. I then went into the gallery and looked at other pieces. (There’s a link at the bottom btw)

This is when the media list caught my eye, at this point I had forgotten that I was reaching artist who used new media in their art work. Here is the list I saw.

These large works vary from 4′ to 6′ wide and all are about 4′ tall.
They incorporate a variety of materials including: 31″ LCD Screens,
Mac Mini Computers, Formica, acrylic plastic, paper, paint, and mirrors.

Studying as an artist myself, I skimmed though the first line, getting a quick mental image of the size of the work. But it was the 31″LCD screens that caught my eye. My thoughts were “Wha?” and then reading about the Mac mini computers as well , I became very curious about this work.

Anyways, I just took a pause from writing and looked at more of Simon’s pieces,in the gallery there is a video link under each art work. These videos are what the LCD screens are used for, and are incorporated into the art work. I absolutely love the idea, and I think  his artist sense is wonderful. I also love the colour palettes he uses and the simplicity of shapes and lines. Really this work is fun to watch.  My favourite collection on his art work page is the Winds Across the Inner Sea.  Sadly his website is not very interesting and the layout isn’t exactly appealing, nevertheless I recommend checking it out.

interesting catch phrases.

so, I was looking though stuff I had written, and… I refer to movies a lot. hahaha

Anyways, that was basically what I wanted to say, then when I started a new post, I realized, headings are hard to write 😦

I realized by now , I sorta write with two voices. One of which is this sorta essay-ish type voice that is drilled into my head from school. This occures when I’m trying to talk about something that involves thought. (and is usually in the media technology and the my 2 cents categories) And the 2nd voice, well is the one I’m using right now where it’s mostly casual conversation. (basically stuff i’m putting in the “still kicking” category, until I make a section for mindless blabble)

By now, I’m sorta realize where I want to write if I was to create a blog. I like referring to movies for examples. I studied quite a few literary courses in school, and for some reason loved book reports. I enjoy reading and watching stories unfold, and making meanings of them.  That, and I’ll connect easier with those who have also seen these movies. (mind I never watch horror films, so don’t expect those, except for maybe two that I’ve been forced to watch)

Anyways, I’m mainly touching on stuff I learned about blogging, and how my creative thinking works. I also realized I tend to remind myself to spell check a lot, but I constantly forget. So, please excuse my typos for now. 🙂

and… last comment.

coming up with creative headings are hard. sometimes I just want to get on with it and write what’s coming to mind. But I keep getting stuck at the heading. I know the importance of a title, to interest the reader and capture their attention, to make them want to read what’s in the praragraph. but really, what I wrote at the top has nothing to do with what I’ve written here.

anyways…. on with the day.

How far should we go?

Posted in media techonolgy, my 2 cents at 9:56 am by Melly

This is my part 2 rant of the surrogates movie.

For starters I want to explain where I am in this. I do play a lot of world of warcraft, many hours a week actually. I’m also dating someone I meet while playing the game, in fact we have been together for almost 3 years now.

What does that say about my opinion of online relationships now? Well, it says I support them and I see the potential of online relationships. I guess I’m here aruging the good side of 2nd life. Only, I personally dislike it …

Here my problem with it,
I started playing World of Warcraft (WoW), as a game, I did not intend to meet anyone online, as a matter of fact, I was in a relationship with someone else at the time. I didn’t play the game looking for match making, or to leave my (now ex) boyfriend.
I understand 2nd life can be used for careers, such as buisness meetings and selling products. Aside from that, I can not see a reason to use 2nd life.
As a person who spends a lot of her time online, and with the internet as one of the only means for me to talk to my boyfriend, I understand how important it is to have ways of staying in touch. Here’s my question though, is there it impossible for you to meet ? Are you light years away from each other? Right now, my boyfriend is here visiting me from the states, 6 hour drive. Sure, let’s argue some people do not have the luxury of owning a vehicle, or even living on the same side of the planet. Then my question is, are you happy with spending REAL money, for fake money to spend time online at some mall, instead of spending that REAL money for REAL life experience at the mall ?

I guess , my dislike is only towards the most extreme cases of users. I mean, I still go to school, go out, hand out with friends, and I love food. I need to leave the house basically is what I’m saying. But that doesn’t change the fact that I also spend a large number of hours on WoW.

I think, all in all… having relationships online is great. One of the greatest things is that you can truly connect with someone, there’s no other distractions. But I think, sometimes it can get carried away, and being someone online with no conciquences is tempting. For example, in 2nd life, you are given the ability to fly, and teleport. And in WoW, I can cast magic spells, and win epic battles with friends.I think what I’m getting at is, as long as you realize it’s not real, and there is a life for you outside of technology. then it’s okay. When your life is the technology you use and play, then.. you’ve probably gone too far.

Just a heads up.

Posted in still kicking! at 6:12 am by Melly

So… I’m supposed to blog specifficaly about 3 topics given in class.

To be honest, I have yet to tackle these… I think I’ve sorta only touched on some of them. (btw this assignment was due last week >> roughly when I posted about how hard it was to write a blog.) In exchange, I have my word press open 24/7 right now, and am writing about what comes to mind.. or things I think relate. Hopefully this will get me in the right direction to write…

Just a heads up, 🙂

Surrogates

Posted in my 2 cents at 6:08 am by Melly

Two nights ago, I watched the movie Surrogates…

Here’s a brief summery, basically what happens is in the near future, someone develops military equipment that allows humans to use their minds and control robots ( aka surrogates) . Later the technology because so advanced and accessable, everyone is now using surrogates, and no one is leaving their home. The main tagline of the company that makes these robots is “live life… better” Surrogates allow people to do anything they want , without worry of harming their actual bodies, such as sky diving or being run over by a car. Also, they allow people to take on any form they want, men can be women or vice versa, and all the surrogates look like beautiful super models. Now everyone can look however they want and do whatever they want, everything is done by their surrogate.

Now, to the point…

The movie of course has a plot line and all the usual stuff, but what I’m actually relating to is the fact that 98% of the human population in this movie was using a fake identity. In our actual reality, there are thousands of people also using a fake identity in things like 2nd life. In this movie, every “controller” was gray, worn out, and looked like a complete mess. Makes you wonder, how many people behind their 2nd life avatar are actually health human beings. If you can sit at your computer all day and pretend to be someone else, what happens to yourself? This movie tackles some huge problems, the creator of surrogates goes and tries to correct what he’s made , because he wants people to “live” again. So, how far exactly should be take these avatars, and when does it overtake their lives?

P.s. There will be a part 2 to this. ahaha… I figure I sound like a hypocrite since I am a devoted world of warcraft player. I should give my personal story.

Blogging

Posted in media techonolgy at 11:08 am by Melly

So, you wouldn’t think sitting at your computer typing would be so hard.

This is almost as hard as writing a book!

I think to be a successful blogger, you must have something interesting to write about, and a creative / unique voice.

To be honest, when I think of blogging now, I think of the book/movie Julie and Julia. Where one of the main characters, Julie, starts a blog about her cooking though Julia Child’s cookbook. (good movie btw)

Meanwhile, I feel like if I’m to blog, I’d want to write about something a. important to me, b. I think people would find interesting to read, and preferably , c. slightly amusing.
Of course, that’s all easier said then done.
I considered writing about my life, about what’s important to me, about things that happen, and my opinion… but who am I to write that, and why would someone care?
I considered, writing about things everyone knows about, music, movies, books… then again, who hasn’t done that?
Writing can’t just be writing for the sake of writing, I feel like I need a purpose to write whatever goes here..

well I guess the point of me writing this whole post is actually, I wanted to admit a new respect for those who are successful bloggers. Really, where do you come up with it, and how do you keep it interesting!

blogging isn’t just typing on your computer…

2nd Life

Posted in media techonolgy at 8:12 pm by Melly

So, these above images are from when my class took an online field trip on 2nd life. It was a cool idea, pretty interesting. I mean, I go with people online at least 2 a week to certain events on WoW. So it’s not something new for me. However many of my classmates were really into this idea. I personally liked when we all came together and we were able to see how everyone had designed their characters.  (Above is a group photo of all of us in a sculpture in 2nd life. We’re all pretty different)I don’t know if I appreciated much of what was in the vitrual world really, I think it’s because I’m used to being able to see whatever on the computer. I’m used to look up an art work and having it show to me, the only difference with 2nd life was that I could technically “move around” in the area.

Above are images of myself and two friends playing in a band, we walked up with our avatars and clicked on the instruments and that was it. Sure you can argue, look we can all play together in a band! But I’ve played RockBand with roommates and friends, and it’s much more exciting. I guess if I was talking to someone from say, China, and we were playing together in that same band, I’d still say… we walked/flew up to the platform and clicked on the instruments. I’m not exactly sure how that’s supposed to be exciting…

I think to enjoy this program, you need people around you who are interested in it, and you need a certain goal . I can’t see logging in to just click on what dance moves you can find to be something anyone would want to spend hours on doing.
